Joan's father was Thomas Ashton and her mother was Elizabeth Staveley. Her paternal grandparents were John Ashton and Dulcia Trafford; her maternal grandfather was Ralph Staveley. She had two sisters named Elizabeth and Margaret. She had a half-brother and a half-sister, named John and Alice.
