Matthew Campbell was born about 1660 in Skipness, Argyll, Scotland . Matthew Campbell's father was Walter CAMPBELL and his mother was Jean CAMPBELL . His paternal grandparents were Mathew CAMPBELL and Elspeth CAMPBELL . He was an only child. He died on April 27th, 1687 in Londonderry, Ireland .General Notes
MATTHEW CAMPBELL (later RHEA,
who was born in Scotland (probably Argyll), and was a descendant of Marjorie Bruce, sister of Robert the Bruce (King of the Scots from 1306 to 1329). Matthew Campbell was a cousin of Archibald Campbell, the 9th earl of Argyll. When the Duke of Monmouth, bastard son of Charles II, invaded England in 1685 in an attempt to wrest the crown from James II, Argyll joined the rebellion and attempted to raise an army in Scotland. He was joined by his cousin Matthew, but their efforts failed, and their small band was surrounded and captured. Argyll was beheaded and Matthew was given a life sentence and imprisoned at Castle Peel on the Isle of Man. He escaped by bribing his jailer, and fled to Fahan, Ireland, where he changed his name to Reagh (later Rhea).
There is a story that, when Matthew changed his name from Campbell to Reagh, he was merely resuming the old Gaelic original. Reagh in Gaellic means "beautiful meadow". Campbell is said to be derived from the Latin "campo bello", which can also be translated to mean "beautiful meadow".
On April 27, 1687 Matthew married Janet Baxter. Their children were William (born 1687), Archibald, and Matthew II (born circa 1689). Matthew was part of a protestant army that fought against James II in Ireland from April 19 to July 30, 1689.
