  According to a census in 1850, Panola, MS, Richard Mooney was Richard Purnell. His father was George L. Purnell. Then, in the 1860 census in Yalobushalo, MS, there was no George Purnell and Richard's last name became Mooney.
  
  I am guessing that George Purnell left or was killed between 1850 and 1860. Richard's mother's name was Emiline. I believe that Emiline's mother was married to a William Mooney and they adopted Richard.
