Joseph DOAN 
Joseph was born in 1726 in Plumstead, Bucks, PA. Joseph's father was Isreal DOAN and his mother was Ester Dillon. His paternal grandparents were Daniel DOANE and Mehitable TWINING. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Israel Jr. , Mahlon, Elijah, Elizabeth , Rachael, Martha and Mary . He died in Walpole, Haldimand Co., Ontario, Canada .General Notes
Note:
Researcher has in files several articles about the children of Joseph and Hester, Moses, Aaron, Levi and Joseph who were known as the Tory Doans during the Rev. War and were notorious outlaws during that period. Also a book called, "The Fire and the Hammer" by Shirley Barker, a fictionlized account of this family. Shirley is related to the Doan family, also.
Note:
After Moses Doan was shot in 1783, the towns people dropped his body on his Father's doorstep. Joseph's land was taken from him as payment for Moses' crimes. He and his family had to leave town. Most went into Canada, others went to North Carolina.
Associates of the gang, including Joseph Doane Sr., met various punishments. The elder Doane (the father) was branded on the hand and jailed for six months. After serving his sentence, he and his wife remained in Plumstead as paupers until the late 1790s. At that time they migrated to Canada, following all of their surviving children. Solomon and Jesse Vickers migrated as well, one eventually marrying a Doane daughter. Mahlon Doan either fled to England or died as a result of his final escape. Joseph Jr. was recorded teaching school for about five years after his arrival on the Niagara Peninsula, then served as a Justice of the Peace. During the War of 1812, both he and his brother Aaron fought for the British. Joseph Jr. returned on foot to Plumstead in 1818 in an unsuccessful attempt to get restitution for his father's property. He died in 1844 in Walpole, Haldimand Co, Ontario, Canada

Joseph Doan, Sr., the father of the outlaw Moses, lived on a farm on what is now Route 611 just south of Plumsteadville. He and his wife Hester had the dubious honor of fathering five of the six Doan outlaws: Joseph, Jr., Moses, Aaron, Levi and Mahlon. Abraham, their first cousin, was the sixth member of the band.
