Narrative
Alias:<ALIA> Comte /de Brusle/
Joesph-Antoine Brusle, Chevalier of the Order of St. Louis, and comte de
Brusle was born in New Orleans but went in the 1750s to seek his fortune
on the French colonial island of Saint-Domingue which later became Haiti.
At first he grew coffee in the mountain valleys or mornes near
Grande-Riviere du Nord, later appointed a titled representative of the
French Crown as commandant of police in Petite Riviere d'Artibonite.
Killed in gory rebellion of the 1790s that destroyed the French colony
while fighting as a Captain in the British Army trying to restore order.
His brothers were put to death and their daughters died after "the most
horrible outrages." Among the few to escape were Louis Moreau
Gottschalk's grandfather, Theodat-Camille Brusle and grandmother,
Josephine-Alix Deynault.
