It was John Jeaffreson/Jefferson who came to repesent the London Company
in the operation of the colony in Virginia at Jamestown and arrived in
1608 on the ship, "Bona Nova." He lived on two hundred fifty acres at
Archers Hope near Jamestown and in the first Virginia Assembly of 1619 he
represented Flower Du Hundred. He missed the mass murder of the
Jamestown settlers of 1622 by being a London merchant and trader and was
away at the time. His name can be seen today on the Capt. John Smith
Statue and on a sign at the entrance of the ruins of the old church at
Jamestown Island. The foundation of the first church, the site of the
first Assembly of 1619, can be seen, under glass, on the floor inside on
the left side of the present church ruins. It was about 1656 that he
purchased the Dullingham Manor in Cambridge, England. After his death in
1660 his only son, Christopher, whose wife died shortly after marriage
with no children, inherited the Dullingham Manor. John
Jeaffreson/Jefferson II is the 3rd Great Uncle of President Thomas
Jefferson. (Info provided by Herb Barger, herbar@@erols.com)
