George Lee Clyburn was in the U.S. Navy, 1942-1945. He was Beach Master
at Omaha Beach, during the Allied invasion of Normandy, France which was
occupied by the German forces.
After the invasion of Europe he was transferred to the Pacific and served
aboard the APA Neshoba, an amphibious attach ship. He was at Okinawa,
April 1, 1945 (Easter Sunday), the date U.S. forces landed. This was the
beginning of the last great amphibious operation of the war, and one of
the most bitter of the Pacific campaigns. The battle lasted for 82 days.
