The Madison Courier, May 15, 1972
'Ted' Renne, Businessman, Teacher, Dies
Carl "Ted" Renne, well-known Madison businessman and special education teacher here for more than five years, died at 3:15 A.M. yesterday at King's Daughters Hosital. He was 62.
His home was at 623 west Main Street.
He and his wife, the former Bula Butler whom he married in 1962, owned and operated Bula's Inc.
Renne came to Madison in 1951 and with his first wife, the former Helen Cavanaugh, operated the Renne laundry at the northeast corner of Main and Mill Streets. She was killed in an automobile crash 12 years ago.
He was a native of Shevlin, Minnesota. After graduation from Concordia College (Moorehead, Minn.), he was a hgih school coach at Wild Rose, N.D. in 1934, and served four years, 1934-38 as a high school coach and principal at Ogilvie, Minn.
He was an FBI man in South America from 1941-46, and had a coverup job with the Wilbur-Ellis Export and Import Company in several South American countries. After leaving the FBI, he continued with that company until 1951 when he came to Madison.
Renne accepted a position as a special education teacher in a new program at the Madison Junior High School and began important work with handicapped children in September of 1965. He continued these duties until ill health forced his resignation Dec. 10 of last year.
Last Friday evening, at its annual dinner meeting, the Jefferson County Association for Retarded Children awarded Renne its Certificate of Award. Although unable to attend the event, Renne was presented later with the certificate and a letter stated he was instrumental in teaching special children, and in the acceptance of the retarded in numerous cases.
He was a charter member of the Lide White Memorial Boys' Club board of directors, and has served on that board continuously during the 15 years of the club's existence. He was in charge of obtaining camperships for hundreds of boys to attend Camp Bradford Woods [in Morgan County, Indiana].
He had been a longtime booster of the Madison Regatta, and had served a term as its secretary-treasurer, and was a former pit chairman.
He was one of the first police commissioners named by the late mayor Markt Lytle when that group was appointed in 1960, and he served two terms as a commissioner.
He was a former member of the zoning board and the Girl Scout board.
He was a member of the Madison Rotary Club, and was chairman of Rotary's Christmas party for Boys' Club members for many years.
He also was a member of the Madison Country Club, Elks, Moose, Madison Downtown Retail Merchants Association, and the Madison Classroom Teachers Association.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife Bula; three daughters: Karen, a teacher of Spanish and English at Hartford City [Indiana]; Sally, who graduated yesterday from Albion (Mich.) College; and Margo[t], a junior at Madison Consolidated High School; two sisters: Mrs. Clara Austin, Hamilton, Mont.; and Mrs. Edel Austin, San Francisco; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday at Trinity Methodist Church, with burial in Springdale Cemetery.
Friends may call from 7:30 P.M. today until 9:30 P.M. tomorrow at the Lytle Mortuary. Elks services will be held there at 7:30 P.M. tomorrow.
The family has requested that expressions of sympathy take the form of conributions to the Jefferson County Association for Retarded Children or the Lide White Memorial Boys' Club.
