1564 - 1566 - Survey of Manor of Tatworth, Chard (T/PH/VCH/14):

WALTER DEANE by a copy dated 3 April Henry VIII (1527) holds a tenement and Cottage for his life.

1566 Survey of Tatworth Manor (Devon R.O. 123 M/E31

Walter Deane holds by copy dated 3 Apr. 1527 one heriotable tenement and one cottage, to which pertains 17 acres of land lying in divers closes or parcels, viz. a curtilage, garden and orchard, 4 acres in South Field, 7 acres in Myddlellfelde, 5 acres in North Field 2 1/2 acres in Holwaie, 3 rods in Gulwill Meade, 1/2 acre in Gore Meade. To hold to him for term of his life by grant of Thomas la Ware and Lady Elizabeth his wife under fine 33s4d, rent 13s.

1568 Apr. 21 -

A leasse to be made to Water [sic] Deane, Johan his wiff and Elen their doughter of vij closes of pasturer [sic] and arrable called Caprons downe in the tything of Lye in the parishe of Wynsham by est[imation] xxx acres and sute to the courte for xx li. paid in hand, attornayes John Pears, Thomas Toker.

WALTER DEANE holds by copy dated 16 April 7 Elizabeth (1565) a tenement and cottage for his life and the life of LETICIE, DAU. OF WILLIAM HILL. Undated later note of reversion of property to Eleanor Balstone and Joan Deane, dau. of the said Joan on 10 Oct. 30 Elizabeth (1588).

Johanna Deane widow, lated wife of Walter Deane deceased holds by indenture dated 23 Apr. 1582, 7 closes of land, meadow and pasture containing by estimation 30 Acres called Caprons Downe, lying in the tithing of Leigh (all trees reserved0 to hold the same for her life and after to remain to William Deane her son for term of his life by rent of 7s a year and 6s8d in the name of a heriot and suit of court twice a year [DD/TOR 222]

Johanna Deane widow holds one tenement and one cottage with appurtenances of 17 acres [etc. as listed above] to hold for her widowhood and after the premises to be granted to Elenor Balston and Johanna Deane, daughters of the said Johanna, for term of their lives by grant of John Petre kt. for fine of 30 pounds as appears by copy dated 10 Oct. 1593, by rent 14s.

1591 Sept. 3 Street and Leigh Court Book

...present that Walter Deane, who of the Lord held by indenture certain closes called Capon [sic] Downe, containing by estimation 30 acres, died since the last court [previous court was held 9 Apr. 1591], whereupon there fell due to the lord for reliec 6s8d. And it is presented that the bailiff should admonish the wife of the said Walter that she produce the writing by which she claims to hold the said premises and show the same to the steward at the next court [ the next court was held on 7 Sept. 1591, but included no relevant entry]

Survey acreage and a tenement held by Walter Deane, of South Chard in the Survey of 1580 is held by Johana Deane, wid. for her life, after which the property is to go to Eleanor Balstone and Johanna Deane for their lives

Will of Walter Deane is dated July 7, 1585, proved Jul 10, 1591, by Geoffrey Clarke Notary Public, Proctor for William Deane the son and executor. . (PCC Sainberbe 56, Wills vol 62 Somerset Record Office).

To be bur. in churchyard in Chard. To poor folks 20 groates. To Eleanor Deane my daughter 30 pounds...to Joan Deane my daughter 30 pounds. Residue of my goods; to Joane my wife one moiety thereof, for her life, and aftr her death to remain to William my son to whom I give all the rest of my goods, and I make him sole executor...THOMAS BONDAGE, THOMAS SMITHE and JOHN LEGG of Southcharde to be overseers, to whom I give 2s apiece. Witnessed by John Willsonn, John Burghe, Thomas Smithe

Will of Joane Deane, widow of Chard is dated March 29, 1597, proved May 10, 1597.

" ........To 20 poor folk of Chard 4d each... To Joane, daughter of my son, William. To Son William,. To daughter, Elianor, HUMFRIE BALSTON, daughter Joan Deane to be executrix. BARNARD COGAN, ROBERT WARRYE overseers. Witnesses: Robert Warrye, BARNARD COGAN, SILVESTER BALSTON." (Wills, Vol. 62, Somerset Rec. Soc.)

'The premisses beingein hande are graunted to Thomas Deane and his assigness yf hee, Mary Warey dau. of John Wary, and Isaac Deane son of William Deane live by indent. 31 Oct. 1628, fine 130 pounds".

This lease is dated 31 Oct, 1628 to SYLVESTER BALSTONE his Executors and Assignes Untill the Eleventh daye of October which shalbe in the year of our Lorde one Thousand six hundred fortie and three yf THOMAS DEANE OF CHARDE aforesaid Clothier, MARY WARREY, DAUGHTER OF JOHN WARREY, and ISAACK DEANE SONNE OF WILLIAM DEANE OF CHARDE aforesaid or any of them doe so long live.
