Owain Fawr ap Gruffydd was born about 1100 in of Caernarvonshire, Wales.1 Owain Fawr ap Gruffydd's father was Gruffydd ap Cynan Prince of Gwynedd and his mother was Angharad verch Owain. His paternal grandparents were Cynan ap Iago Prince of Gwynedd and Rhanullt ingen Olaf (Ragnhildir) of Dublin; his maternal grandparents were Owain ap Edwin Lord Tegaingl and Morwyl verch Ednywain. He had two sisters named Gwenlian and Susanna. He was the youngest of the three children. He died in December 1169 in Caernarvonshire, Wales.1 General Notes

itself and Owain materially added to the resources of his country & re-occupied several districts, which the Welsh had lost in former years. In the meantime however, he and Cadwaladr quarreld and the latter fled to England. Also during these years (C25) Rhys ap Gruffydd, a son of Gruffydd ap Rhun, who was son of Rhys ap Tewdwr, had won several comparatively important engagements and successes in the south.
