Joseph was born in 1746. Joseph's father was Thomas Holeman and his mother was Mary Unknown. His paternal grandparents were Daniel Holeman and Elizabeth Unknown. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Daniel, Thomas, Isaac, Rachel, Rebecca and Grace. He had four half-brothers and three half-sisters, named James, Jacob, Isaac, Reuben, Susannah, Elizabeth and Margaret.-
