Nathaniel was born on April 18th, 1758 in Mansfield, Tolland, CT.1 Nathaniel's father was Nathaniel Cary and his mother was Dorcas Marcy. His paternal grandparents were Jabez Cary and Hannah Hendee. He had six sisters named Mary, Delight, Dorcas, Lucretia, Sibel and Sarah. He was the fourth oldest of the seven children. He had six half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Barzillia, Asa, John, Eleazer, Prosper, Persis, Jerusha and Hannah.-
