Narrative
[SUSANNA KEENE.FTW]
Apparently died from over eating Lampreys, or of food
poisoning.
Acceded.
Interred at Reading Abbey, which he founded.
Reigned as King of England 1100-1135. Restrained growing power
of the barons.
United Saxons & Normans under one rule & began a sense of
English nationalism.
Reign is notable for important legal and administrative
reforms.
Known for final resolution of the investiture controversy.
Waged several wars to consolidate and expand his continental
possesions.
Was so hated by his brothers that they vowed to disinherit him.
Captured Robert II Curthose his brother (1106) & held him until
he (Robert)died.
A hard but just ruler. Known as "Beauclerk" or "the Lion of
Justice."
No proof implicating him in death of elder brother William II
Rufus.
By end of reign, he was the Lord of England, Normandy & Maine.
After William's death while hunting in the New Forest in 1100,
his younger brother, Henry I (reigned 1100-35), succeeded to
the throne. By 1106 he had captured Normandy from his brother,
Robert, who then spent the last 28 years of his life as his
brother's prisoner. An energetic and decisive ruler, Henry
centralised the administration of England and Normandy in the
royal court, and extended royal powers of patronage.
