Egbert (802-839).
Egbert, b. 775, d. after 19 Nov. 838, son of Eahlmund, King of K ent. Egbert was King of Wessex, 802-827, and was the first kin g of all England, 827-836; m. Raedburh.
The male line of kings descends from him to Edward the Confesso r and the female line to the present time. (ASC 800, 823, 825, 8 27, 828, 836; NSE X 209-210; Searle, 342-43). (See Harold W. Smi th, Saxon England, gens. 9-13. This ref. omits Cutha (1-6) in ea rly portion of pedigree.)
Known as the first King of All England, he was forced into exile at the court of Charlemagne, by the powerful Offa, King of Mercia. Egbert returned to England in 802 and was recognized as king of Wessex. He defeated the rival Mercians at the battle of Ellendun in 825. In 829, the Northumbrians accepted his overlordship and he was proclaimed "Bretwalda" or sole ruler of Britain
