Summer 1862; captured 6/28/62; exchanged; w. in neck by shell fragment 11/3/62 Upperville; promoted Brig. Genl. 9/1/63 "for active and brilliant services"; elected to C. S. House of Representatives 5/2/64 to 3/1/65, 2nd Session; resigned 11/9/64 to attend congress; named to Military Committee 11/19/64; joined GOP 1865; President, Virginia Central RR 1865; 2nd Vice-President C&O RR 1878; declined Secretaryship of the Navy 1880; declined nomination for Governor 1881; elected Va.
