Narrative
"For Isham's inheritance from his father in what was afterwards became Goochland County, see Henrico Records, 1710-1714, Pt. I, pp. 215-218. The first grant to him there appears to have been for 1200 acres on May 6, 1730, and the largest, for 3000, on May 4, 1734; see Council Journals, Colonial Va., IV, 218, lv, 323, 349; other grants and patents are on pp. 313, 409. Marie Kimball in the The Road to Glory, p. 308, note 31, says that between 1730 and 1736 he patented 8800 acres adjoining his original inheritance in Goochland. In my opinion the total of Isham Randolph's holdings in Goochland was smaller than this estimate, but he was unquestionably a large landholder in the county and he received extensive grants elsewhere, whether or not all of these were perfected.
Further details on his servace as adjutant general and the surrounding circumstances are as follows: Governor Gooch was present at the meeting of the Council on Aug. 28, 1740, but did not attend again until Oct. 15, 1741. Isham's service as chief military officer, accordingly, occurred between these two dates. On Gooch's participation in the expedition see W & M., 1 ser., XVI, 18; Va. Mag., XXX, 1-20, 390-391. Capt. Lawrence Washington was the ranking Virginia officer under Gooch, and afterwards named his place Mount Vernon for the commander of the naval forces."
