Narrative

PEPIN CAROLMAN, KING OF ITALY
BIRTH
773Pepin I (Carloman) was born on 12 April 773 at Aachen, Prussia, in what is now Germany. A birth date of 773 is given by many sources name Variation Pepin I (Carloman) , King of Italy was also found as Pepin of Lombardy.

ASCENTION
In 781Pepin became the King of Italy.

BAPTISM
4 December 781, Pepin was rebaptized by Pope Adrian I at Rome, Italy. Collins does, however, differ slightly from Nelson regarding the period at which Pepin "the Hunchback" ceased to be regarded as a potential heir to the throne. Collins, p. 69, notes the 781 rebaptism of CM's second son by Hildegarde, a boy who up to then had borne the name Carloman but thereafter was known as Pepin. Collins regards this rebaptism, which was performed by the pope himself, as "a clear sign" that the elder Pepin was being excluded from the succession. (Nelson thinks there was no indication of the elder Pepin's exclusion before the conspiracy of 792.) The rebaptism of 781 need not, however, mean that the elder Pepin was really a hunchback, nor that Charlemagne regarded him as illegitimate. It appears rather that CM at this point decided that Hildegarde's sons alone were his true heirs, so the elder Pepin had to be shunted aside and his place taken by the "new" Pepin (formerly Carloman). AssocWith* Pepin I (Carloman) , King of Italy may have married first or been associated with Ingeltrude of the Franks, daughter of Duke Bernard of the Franks.

MARRIAGE
About 794Pepin I (Carloman), King of Italy, married Bertha of Toulouse, daughter of William I Duke of Toulouse and Gilbour of Hornbach, circa 794. Tompsett says in Bertha's sheet that they were married ca 795.

DEATH
8 January 810 Pepin I (Carloman) died at Milan, Italy at age 36 probably of the plague. After the death of Pepin, his son Bernhard and five daughters went to live with Pepin's father, Charlemagne.
