Roger succeeded his father (Roger I de Montgomery) as seigneur de Montgomery and vicomte of th Hiesmois. Between 1045 and 1048 he issued a charter for Jumieges. Between 1050 and 1059 he founded the abbey of St. Martin de Troarn.

In 1048 he accompanied Duke William of Normandy on the expedition against Domfront and Alencon. In 1066 he assisted the Duchess in the government of Normandy during the invasion of England. In December 1067 he was with King William the Conqueror in England and was grated Arundel and Chichester. In December 1074 he was created Earl of Shrewbury (Shropshire). in 1079/1080 he pushed for peace between William and Fulk, Duke of Anjou. In 1079 he helped reconcile William with his son Robert. He built the castle of Montgomery before 1086. Ancester.com-OneWorld Tree, "Samford-Shulsen Family", Contact: Evelyn Beran, evelyn.beran@charter.net.

BIOGRAPHY: Roger was one of William the Conqueror's loyal barons who stayed behind in Normandy during the invasion itself. he arrived in England the year following the Battle of Hastings and received lands in Sussex and is believed to have built Montgomery Castle (now Powys). William the Conqueror assigned Roger the task of controlling the Marches, or border lands, between England and Wales. He made Shrewsbury his base of power.

The Earldom of Shresbury, which is one of the most ancient in the English peerage, dates from the time of William the Conqueror. Roger de Montgomery (c. 1030-1094) and son of another Roger Montgomery, was a councillor of William, Duke of Normandy, before his invasion of England and was probably entrusted by William with the govbernment of Normandy during the expedition of 1066.

Roger came to England in the following year and received extensive grants of land in different parts of the kingdom. Obtaining thus a large territory in Susse, including the city of Chichester and the castle of Arundel, he became the Earl of Arundel, or probably and more correctly, the Earl of Sussex.

In 1071 the greater part of the county of Shropshire was granted to him, carrying with it the title of Earl of Shropshire. Though, from his principal residence at the castle of Shrewsbury, he, like his successors, was generally styled as Earl of Shrewsbury. He probably exercised palatine authority. He was the founder of Shrewsbury. Ancestry.com-OneWorldTree, "Melvin Edward Baker, Jr. Contact: Melvin Baker, melebaker@aol.com

Roger de Montgomerie, known as Roger the Great de Montgomery, was the first Earl of Shrewsbury. His father was also Roger de Montgomerie, and was a relative, probably a grandnephew, of the Duchess Gunnor, wife of Duke Richard I of Normandy. The elder Roger had large holdings in central Normandy, chiefly in the valley of the Dives, which the younger Roger inherited.

Roger was one of William the Conqueror's principal counselors. He did not fight in the initial invasion of England in 1066, instead staying behind to help govern Normandy. Afterwards he was entrusted with land in two places critical for the defense of England, receiving the rape of Arundel at the end of 1067 (or in early 1068), and in November 1071 he was created Earl of Shrewsbury. (A few historians believe that while he received the Shropshire territories in 1071 he was not created Earl until a few years later.)

Roger was thus one of the half a dozen greatest magnates in England during William the Conqueror's reign. In addition to the large part of Sussex included in the Rape of Arundel, and seven-eights of Shropshire which were associated with the earldom of Shrewsbury, he had estates in Surrey, Hampshire, Wiltshire, Middlesex, Hertfordshire, Gloucestershire, Worcestershire, Cambridgeshire, Warwickshire and Staffordshire.

After William I's death in 1087, Roger had joined with other rebels to overthrow the newly crowned King William Rufus in the Rebellion of 1088. However William Rufus was able to convince Roger to abandon the rebellion and side with him, which was fortuitous as the rebels were beaten and lost their land holdings in England.

Roger first married Mabel of Bellême, who was heiress to a large territory on both sides of the border between Normandy and Maine; 10 children were issued through the marriage.
