    As a little boy, Viserys, the only surviving son of Aerys II ( the “Mad King”), and his pregnant mother were spirited away from King’s Landing before the fall of the Targaryen dynasty.  His mother died giving birth to Daenerys, Viserys’ sister.
    
    For fifteen years, Viserys and Daenerys lived in poverty and exile, wandering the Free Cities, with Viserys hoping to find someone to help him return to Westeros and reclaim the Iron Throne.  During this time, Viserys was mocked and known as the Beggar King because he had to rely on the generosity of those sympathetic to his cause. 
    
    Viserys is a cruel, ambitious man, blunt of speech and given to violent mood swings.  A thin young man, he has the unnatural good looks of the Targaryens, but he has lived too long in dread and privation.  He has a notorious temper and often abuses his sister.
    
    Viserys arranged the marriage of his sister, Daenerys, to Khal Drogo, hoping to buy Drogo's armies of blood warriors with her and use them to reclaim the Seven Kingdoms.   Viserys is blind to reality -- while he sees himself as a rightful, victorious savior to the people of Westeros, due their respect and adoration, he never notices that Daenerys and his sworn knight, Jorah Mormont, scorn his petty, vindictive nature.
    
    Despite a constant loss of dignity and standing among Drogo's khalasar for his outrageous behavior, Viserys continued to demand Drogo's aid and to verbally abuse his sister after Daenerys and Drogo were wed, finally demanding that  Drogo "crown" him with molten gold.  Viserys did not survive this “crowning”, although his plan to regain a family Kingdom did -- Daenerys' marriage to Drogo gained her control of the Khal's army.
