Richard was born in 1702 in Staten Island, Richmond, New York, United States.  Richard's father was Nathaniel Brittain and his mother was Elizabeth Gerritsen.  His maternal grandparents were Gerrit Gerritsen and Neesje Pieterse Marselis. He had eight brothers and five sisters, named Nathaniel, Richard, Abraham, John, William, Abraham, <Unknown>, <Unknown>, Alice, Sarah, Rachel, <Unknown> and <Unknown>.  He died at the age of 69 in 1771 in Monmouth, New Jersey, United States.
