Saartje was born in 1867 in Aruba.  Saartje's father was Jan Hendrik Godfried Eman and her mother was Anna Catharina  Van der Biest. She had five brothers and two sisters, named Nicolaas, Benoit, Cornes, Harmen, Richard, Regina and Sarah.  She died at the age of 73 in 1940 in Aruba.
