Valerie Yvonne was born in 1934. Valerie Yvonne's father was Vivian Peter van Blerk and her mother was Maria Theresa Clara Poyurs (van Blerk). Her paternal grandparents were Peter John van Blerk and Regina Eliza Barry (van Blerk); her maternal grandparents were Maurice Poyurs and Maria Petronella Elizabeth Botha (Poyurs). She had two brothers and a sister, named Malcolm Garth, Maurice Peter and Ronelle Anita. She was the oldest of the four children.
