John was born in 1898 in Rouxville.  John's father was Jacobus Johannes x van Blerk and his mother was Annie Justina du Toit (van Blerk). He had four brothers and three sisters, named Tobias, Unnamed, Alburtus Hendrik, Jacobus Johannes, Annie Justina, Daisy and Margrietha Magdalena.  He died at the age of 45 on June 19th, 1943 in Pietermaritzburg.
