Henry Christian's father was Christiaan Hendrik Jacobus van Blerk and his mother was Rachel Abel (van Blerk). His paternal grandparents were Hendrik Everhadus van Blerk and Elizabeth Jacoba Rippel (van Blerk). He had nine sisters named Eliza Catherine, Fredrika Elizabeth Christina Alletta, Florence Rachel, Christina Elizabeth, Elizabeth Dorethea, Magdelena Hendrika, Judith Rachel, Louisa Dorethea and Rachel.-
