Maria Catharina was born on July 21st, 1824. Maria Catharina's father was Jacobus Cornelius Coetzee and her mother was Susanna Catharina Magdalena van Blerk (Coetzee). Her maternal grandparents were Jan Barend van Blerk and Maria Catharina van den Berg (van Blerk). She had three brothers named Gert Lodewyk, Jan Barbard and Jacobus Cornelis.
