Spinney Whitman

Spinney was born in 1798. Spinney's father was Jacob Whitman and his mother was Annie Spinney. His maternal grandparents were John Spinney and Joanna Roberts. He had three brothers and four sisters, named David, Jacob, Whitefield, Mercy, Joanna, Ann and Elizabeth. He died at the age of 80 on December 23rd, 1878 in Cabso, Nova Scotia.

General Notes
- Spinney Whitman first came to Canso as a young man, encouraged by his uncle Abraham, who assisted Spinney in his business as a tanner and shoemaker. However, hides were difficult to come by and he gave up the business. His first wife, Caroline, died of tuberculosis after four years of marriage at the age of 20. Spinney was reportedly "a most upright man and honest", and was highly respected in the community. A hill in Canso is named " Spinney Hill" in his memory.
