David was born on December 21st, 1810 in Smithville, Nova Scotia.  David's father was Nathaniel Smith and his mother was Susan Spinney.  His paternal grandparents are Nathaniel Smith and Patience Swaine; his maternal grandparents were John Spinney and Susan Snow. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Nathaniel, Benjamin, William, Mary and Susanna.  He was the second oldest of the six children.  He died at the age of 79 on March 30th, 1890 in Shelburne, Nova Scotia.
