John E was born in June 1872 in Iowa.1   John E's father is Samuel Vanness and his mother is Mary Elizabeth Hays. He has two brothers and three sisters, named William W., Fred D., Jennie D., Rosa B. and Rose B.  He is the fifth oldest of the six children.
