His paternal grandparents were Pieter Janszoon MONSTER and Maria Jansdochter FORTUIJN; his maternal grandparents are Eldert NOORLANDER and Lijntje JABAAIJ. He had seven brothers and a sister, named Eldert, Jacob, Hendrik, Jan, Cornelis, Johannes, Leendert and Lijntje. He is the oldest of the nine children.
