Pieter was born in 1849 in Pella,Ia.  Pieter's father is Gerrit Klein and his mother is Hendrika Heikoop.  His paternal grandparents are Teunis Klein and Margje Kars; his maternal grandparents are Teunisson Heikoop and Neeltje Middlekoop. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Maarten, Jan T. (John), Neeltje, Teunis and Evertje.
