William was born on August 1st, 1842 in Perth, Perthshire, Scotland.1   William's father was James McNab and his mother was Janet Ewing.  His paternal grandparents were John McNab and Kathrine Rutherford. He had a brother and five sisters, named Andrew, Jane, Elizabeth, Isabella, Margaret and Helen.  He was the third oldest of the seven children.
