    - The 1937 Battle of Shanghai was a major engagement between Chinese and Japanese troops fought during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Britain was not a combatant against Japan until 1941, so British citizens would NOT have been taken prisoner by the Japanese in 1937. Most likely, your uncle continued working at his job during the early years of Japan's occupation of Shanghai. If he was still in Shanghai when Britain declared war on Japan in 1941, then he may have been taken prisoner then.
      
      Japan destroyed most of it's records during the closing days of World War II. Desperate Japanese politicians and soldiers knew the records were proof of their war crimes and atrocities. Destroying records ultimately did little good for the Japanese, as witnesses and survivors of their brutality identified them to Chinese troops. Hundreds of Japanese war criminals were executed by the Chinese military.
      
      Wartime Japan was not a signatory to the Geneva Convention, so Japan did not comply with any international standards regarding treatment of prisoners of war. Wartime Japan was known for its cruelty and inhumanity. Your best chance of finding records about your uncle may lie with the Japanese government.
