Mari was born in March 1798. Mari's father was Peeter Volmer and her mother was Tiiu Volmer. Her paternal grandparents were Volmer and Mai; her maternal grandparents were Jaan and Mai. She had two brothers and a sister, named Ado, Juhan and Eva. She was the oldest of the four children.
