Mats' father was Pärt and his mother was Madli. His paternal grandfather was Mihkel and his paternal grandmother is Margret; his maternal grandparents were Toomas and Ann. He had three half-brothers and five half-sisters, named Mihkel, Juhan, Andres, Kristin, Liis, Ann, Eva and Liis.
