CAPT John was born in 1700 in Augusta County, VA.  CAPT John's father was William Grant (banished from Scotland in 1690 for his support of Prince Edward ("Bonnie Prince Charlie") in the Battle of Culloden) and his mother was Elizabeth Mott (Grant).  His paternal grandfather was John  Grant and his paternal grandmother is Hester  Foote (Grant); his maternal grandparents are George  Mott and Elizabeth Pigg. He had two brothers and two sisters, named William, Daniel, Mary and Margaret.  He was the oldest of the five children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named James and   Jane.  He died at the age of 62 on June 25th, 1762.
