Nelly was born on October 5th, 1947.  Nelly's father was Luis Andres Rojas Chaparro and his mother was Maria  José Escalante Zambrano.  His paternal grandparents were Jose Leonardo Rojas Chacon and Catalina del Socorro Chaparro Ramirez; his maternal grandparents were Jose Julian de los Reyes Escalante Narvaez and Maximiana Zambrano Carreo. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Julian, Luis, Aura and Maria.  He is the youngest of the five children.
