Berta was born on April 8th, 1917 in Clarines.  Berta's father is Rafael Armas Chacin and her mother is Dolores Mirabal.  Her paternal grandparents are Dionisio Armas Itriago and Antonia Teresa Chacin Espinoza. She had three half-brothers and a half-sister, named Rafael, Alfredo Julio, Roberto and Lourdes.
