Benita's father was Esteban Jose Marrero Hernandez and her mother was Maria Gregoria Sotomayor.  Her paternal grandparents are Juan Marrero and Rosalia Hernandez. She had six brothers and three sisters, named Francisco, Nicolas, Rafael, Hilario, Martin, Jose del Rosario, Felipa, Petronila and Maria Telesfora.
