Placido's father was Jose Vicente Gutierrez Otero and his mother was Epifania Rojas.  His paternal grandfather was Jose Nicolas Gutierrez and his paternal grandmother is Magdalena Otero; his maternal grandparents are Antonio Ramos Abencerraje and Antonia Rojas. He has two brothers and six sisters, named Miguel, Dionicio, Soledad, Felicita, Vicenta, Magdalena, Maria Josefa and Angela.
