Madog Ap was born about 1182 in Powys, Montgomeryshire, Wales.¹ Madog Ap's father was Gwenwynwyn Ap Owain and his mother was Margred Verch Rhys. He had a brother and a sister, named Gruffydd De La Pole Ap and Jane Verch Gwenwynwyn. He was the oldest of the three children.¹
