Betty was born in 1768 in Inveranon, Baniff, Scotland.1   Betty's father was John Grant and her mother was Elizabeth Grant. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Alexander, Swithun, Frances and Mary. She had five half-brothers and a half-sister, named Peter, William, Finley, Lawrence, John and Grant.  She died at the age of 100 in 1868.
