Robert was born in 1837 in Sutton, Kildwick, Yorkshire, England.1   Robert's father was Richard Petty and his mother was Sarah (Petty).  He had four brothers and a sister, named John, Thomas, William, Joshua and Mary.  He was the third oldest of the six children.
