James Lister was born in December 1885 in Bradford, Yorkshire, England.1   James Lister's father was Titus Petty and his mother was Martha Sunderland.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Petty and Hannah Cockshott.  He had a brother and three sisters, named Thomas, Amy, Annie May and Ethel.  He was the fourth oldest of the five children.  He had a half-brother named Norman.
