Emily was born in 1859 in Crosshills, Yorkshire, England.1   Emily's father was Abraham Petty and her mother was Martha (Petty).  She had two brothers and four sisters, named John, Abraham, Margaret, Elizabeth, Hannah and Mary.  She was the fifth oldest of the seven children.
