Henry was born in 1799 in Salt Lick Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, USA.1  Henry's father was Adam Ritenour Sr. and his mother was Hannah Sleasman (Ritenour).  His paternal grandparents were George Reitenauer and Maria Elizabeth Snyder (Reitenauer, Gallentine); his maternal grandparents were George Sleasman Sr. and Demaris Miller (Sleasman). He had ten brothers and nine sisters, named Samuel, Peter, George, John, Jacob, Joseph, James, Adam, Christian, William, Hannah, Margaret, Susannah, Levina, Demaris, Katherine, Nancy, Anna Marie and Julia. He had a half-brother named George.
