      "..... I went to school with Norma Barnhart at Marion elem. school in Belle Vernon. We were the best of friends until she moved away. I am guessing this was around 1961. ........ She had polio as a child (before I knew her). This illness left her in leg braces. It might have wounded her body but not her spirit. She was one of the kindess and sweetest persons whom I've ever known. The braces did keep her from playing some of the games at recess like jumping rope but I can remember her managing to play tag. I just retired in January after teaching 35 1/2 years and in that time have seen students at times be terribly cruel to each other. I don't remember this happening with Norma. Everyone liked her so much and admired her. She had to fight everyday for what we took for granted. Even though things were sometimes a challenge, Norma was always there with a smile and ready to try. She never complained or felt sorry for herself. When I think back, I realize what a miracle for one so young to be so mature and wise. I thank God that she touched my life for she definately enriched it. ...."
