    Joan R. Trauernicht, age 82 years, of York, widow of Herman Trauernicht, died at The Hearthstone Care Center in York on Friday evening, June 13, 2003.
    She was born on May 31, 1921, at Elwood, Neb., to John Rae and Elva (Groshart) Nelson. She lived on a farm two and one-half miles south of Elwood with her parents. She was baptized in the Elwood Christian Church at the age of 13 years by Rev. Tibbs. She attended rural school through the eighth grade. Joan attended high school in Elwood taking Normal training which certified her to teach for three years, during which time she taught at rural schools.
    
    Joan was united in marriage to Herman Trauernicht on May 31, 1941, at Gering. The couple lived on a farm south of Eustis until Herman was called into military service. Joan was a 4-H leader during the years on the farm. Two children were born to this union, O'Della Jo and Alan Kent. Joan and children were with Herman for his basic training in Texas and when he was a Military Policeman in Washington, D.C.
    
    After Herman's discharge from the military they lived in Elwood and Bertrand, Neb. They moved to Lincoln in 1962 when Herman was called to the ministry. Joan went to college, too, and was certified to be a teacher once again. She taught in Bennett and then at St. Joseph's Catholic School in York. Joan retired from teaching in 1984 and went with Herman on the nine interims he served for the Christian Church. Joan always gave a sermonette for the children for each worship service. She taught Sunday School in each church and also taught Vacation Bible School each year. Her hobbies were sewing, quilt-making, gardening, canning and freezing the garden produce, music, and traveling.
    
    Survivors include one daughter, O'Della Jo (and her husband, Jeff) Taylor of Greensboro, N.C.; one son, Alan Kent (and his wife, Irene) Trauernicht of Albuquerque, N.M.; four grandchildren, Tonya Ann (and her husband, Brien) Brandenburg of Greensboro, N.C., Tricia Lee Ann (and her husband, Pete) Bouras of Greensboro, N.C., Tia Mara (and her husband, Todd) Newcomer of Portland, Ore., and Alex Edgars Trauernicht of Lincoln; three great-granddaughters, Taylor Ann Bouras, Riley Elizabeth Bouras, and Annalyse Marie Brandenburg; one sister, Gwen Deselms of Elwood; two sisters-in-law: Pansy Hall of Mitchell, Neb., and Helen Trauernicht of Nampa, Idaho. Joan was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Herman on Aug. 21, 2002, and a brother-in-law (Jim Deselms).
    
    It was Joan's wishes that following her death her body be cremated. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 22, 2003, at the First Christian Church in York with Pastor Ron Johnson officiating. There will be no viewing or visitation. Memorials may be directed to the First Christian Church or Hospice of Tabitha Healthcare Services. Lewis Funeral Chapel of York is in charge of arrangements.
