Herrmann was born on 12-Dec-1898 in Trossen. Herrmann's father was Johann Smollich and his mother was Wilhelmine Lalla. His paternal grandparents were Michael Smollich and ? Hartwig. He was the third of four children. He had two brothers and a sister, named Johann, Franz and Ida. He died in Niendorf.
