Leader of the Normans of Rouen.
Descended from Norwegian or Danish Vikings.
His original Scandinavian name was "Rolf" - later "Gaange Rolf" (meaning he was too big to tide a horse).
Rolf was derived from the old Norse "Hrolfr".
In French this becomes "Rollo".
He was the leader and ruler of the Vikings who had a gained a foothoold in West Francia.
Charles The Simple gave Rollo and his Viking followers land in exchange for them ceasing raids, and instead protecting Charles and his lands from other Viking bands.
Rollo's descendants and his followers became known as "Normans".
