Emma was born in England and at age 19 took passage on a ship bound for Melbourne, Australia, in order to live with her uncle who had a property in Tasmania. However on board ship she met Thomas Askew Leach. They fell in love and married on board ship. They arrived in Melbourne in 1854 and immediately went to the Victorian goldfields to try their luck. Being unlucky in finding gold, they then set up the general store at the Glenpatrick Diggings which did a thriving business. Here they had 3 children, the eldest being Annie. However unfortunately Mr. Leach suddenly died from an acute illness. Emma continued running the general store, and later married Thomas McLaughlan from Ireland - he was another adventurer looking for gold. They had a further 3 children.
